Houndshow Championship Show 2015 Critique

Thank you to Clare Churchill who was my efficient steward, and to various helpers who came and went during the day.  A nice ring, grass a little too long so lucky you if your hound had poor feet, and the odd pot hole down which dog legs went but humans stayed upright.   A super entry of over 100, and apologies for enjoying watching hounds moving as this delayed my decisions and we finished (rather late) in the rain.  The Deerhound Club’s Championship show, with Club prize money offered and some nice trophies to be won.

PD (4) Abs: 2
1st: PHILLIPS Mr & Mrs A & S Hyndsight To The Limit With Ladygrove – well balanced and attractive young male.  Nice head and expression, eyes and ears.  Good body, kept his topline on the move, good feet and tail carriage.  In good condition, beautifully presented and handled, moving well.  I really liked him.  Best Puppy and made the cut in the big ring.
2nd: STEELE Mrs L Sorimsway Valient Hero – well grown but giving age, and lacked the confidence and assurance of (1).  Attractive head and expression, and well presented.  Time is on his side, but counted against him today.

JD (5) Abs: 1
1st: GRIMSHAW Mr & Mrs G J & J A Greyflax Domino To Jamalison – well bodied, well presented hound with nice head, expression and ears, and a good coat.  Lovely low set hocks, best mover in the class.
2nd: PINCHES Miss T Leoch Jock  - really promising younger hound who was not helping his handler.  Nice proportions overall.
3rd: HELPS Dr S A F & Mrs H B Beardswood Spey

YD (3) Abs: 0
1st: BOND Mrs J Regalflight Rueben – I liked this lad, he has lots of promise.  Lovely to watch on the move but not the easiest of dogs to show.  Good bone, nice front, good body, good feet, bend of stifle - a balanced picture of a maturing hound. Res CC.
2nd: GRIMSHAW Mr & Mrs G J & J A Greyflax The Jazz Singer To Jamalison – well presented and everything is nice about him.  He has good length hip to hock, but not yet the body of (1).  Very promising.
3rd: DE BOLLA Mr & Mrs S & C Regalflight Falon

SBD (1) Abs: 1

PGD (8) Abs: 1

LD (4) Abs: 1
1st: PARSONS, Ms S & MCKINNON Mr T A Finlas At Claonaiglen - upstanding, dark coated male.  Fairly strong head, nice dark eye but lacking facial furnishings.  Good strong neck, nice topline and hind quarters, plenty of substance.

3rd: WILLIAMS Miss J D Greyflax Pie In The Sky

OD (9) Abs: 3
1st: HAWKINS Mr D & Mrs S Ch Kwaricott Corelli – good masculine hound.  Really well presented.  Kindly expression, fairly strong head set into a good strong neck.  Overall a very balanced picture, good topline, bend of stifle, good tail.  Very sound mover, and he strode out well and covered plenty of ground standing and moving.  Dog CC, and BOB.
2nd: MORTON, Ms A & MORGAN Mr J Ch Cotherstone Shot And Steel – I do like this type of hound, he is balanced overall and I like his shape – he has lovely low set hocks.  Not giving of his best on the move today.
3rd: WILKINSON Mr & Mrs C J Sireadh Chase

SpLCD (1) Abs: 0
1st: HELPS Dr S A F & Mrs H B Beardswood Quinlan – well presented, strong male standing over plenty of ground.  Nice head & expression, good topline and nice tail.

VD (2) Abs: 0
1st: DE BOLLA Mr & Mrs S & C Regalflight Mithras – built on generous proportions, 7 year old who made rather heavy weather of showing his paces.  Lots of substance, and a nice type.
2nd: SWANSON Mr I R & Mrs L Menteith Declan Of Altimarlach – I did like this lad, a lightly built 9 year old, looks like he could run for ever.  He reminded me of Portsonachan Piper o’the Pentlands (who was heavier) - I checked his pedigree and there is Piper in 1963.

PB (10) Abs: 5
1st: STEELE Mrs L Sorimsway Sweet Victory well grown 10 month old.  Nice proportions and moved well.  Good front, topline and body, bend of stifle and nice fall away.
2nd: ADAMS Mrs G Stranwith Nia for Zandahar TAF - looking lovely at 6 months, the baby of the class.  Carried herself with aplomb.  I was reminded of Miriam Dickinson’s comment -“a pocket Venus”.  Hope she grows on well.
3rd: KILGAR Miss D Claonaiglen Cona at Maelstrom

JB (7) Abs: 1
1st: WILBRAHAM Ms J Marivon Fallon – I fell in love with this youngster.  Lovely proportions, she is feminine but strong.  Maybe a novice handler, but she moved well.  Pleasing outline with good top line, nice bend of stifle and nice length from hip to hock.  A good body and a nice tail.
2nd: BAILEY Mr & Mrs G & N B Greyflax Teen Spirit – nice rangy sort of bitch, beautifully presented and in good condition.  Attractive head and neck, good body and topline, lovely length from hip to hock.  Was being a prima donna today, but most promising, I think she will be a top winner when she matures.
3rd: ROBERTSON Dr D & Mrs B A Chuilinn Berengaria – another bitch I liked a lot.

YB (4 Entries) Abs: 1 My class of the day, three cracking bitches - all so promising.
1st: RHODES Mr D J Regalflight Raffia of Lairigefyne lovely mature bitch.  Pale grey coat, good body.  Good shoulders, top line, lovely strong hind quarters, nice fall away.  Moved out well once she got the tempo right.
2nd: HELPS, Dr S A F & DOVE, Mrs C L & DOVE Dr R S Foxcliffe Classic Liberty Freedom At Beardswood - well made bitch with a nice harsh, dark coat.  She has a lovely deep body, nice topline, carries herself nicely and moved soundly if without too much drive.
3rd: CUNNINGHAM Mrs S Chuilinn Ballad  - lovely low set hocks.

SBB (2) Abs: 0
1st: WILBRAHAM Ms J Ardlancien Elona – shapely bitch, with a nice topline and good bend of stifle.  Moved nicely, and was balanced overall.
2nd: WHEELER Miss S Regalflight Pemba – different type altogether, made little effort to help her handler and was very relaxed!  Attractive head and expression, and lovely, thin small ears.  A good body, and plenty of substance.  Well presented

PGB (19) Abs: 8
1st: PHILLIPS Mr & Mrs A & S Charbonnel Gobi To Ladygrove – beautifully presented, fit hound who pinged round the ring with lots of drive.  Well built and strong, she was balanced overall.  Good topline, body and quarters with a good tail.
2nd: WILBRAHAM Ms J Ardlancien Elona – see previous class.
3rd: MEER Mrs V & Mr G Shagiead Aunty Hetty For Lordswell – another nice bitch, but she was too thin for me.

LB (11 Entries) Abs: 2
This was a lovely class, with five cracking bitches
1st: ROBERTSON Dr D & Mrs B A Chuilinn Whisper – lovely mature bitch.  Attractive head and expression, good pigmentation, nice length and depth of body.  Good topline, good feet and nice length from hip to hock.  Like all the Chuilinn hounds, she was fit and in good condition.  Reserve CC.
2nd: SHANNON Mrs E Erewhon Wanton Flame – well presented and in good condition.  Nice head and expression, good topline, and good coat.  Moving really well.
3rd: TRESH Ms K Lyndorthwin Ethel Grey
Res: CONSTANTINE Mrs K Cotherstone Islay Mist Of Kaleginy
VHC: BAILEY Mr & Mrs G & N B Greyflax Summer Breeze

OB (9 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: MACBEAN Ms N Killoeter Ralia – strong, mature and beautifully balanced bitch.  She did not recapture that glorious movement I know she has: she performed well enough but no more.  She stands over plenty of ground, and was presented in good condition.  I hope her owner continues to campaign her.  For me, she is a lovely type of deerhound and they don’t make them like this very often.  Without hesitation my Bitch CC winner.
2nd: ROBERTSON Dr D & Mrs B A Chuilinn Magdalena – what an attractive hound.  I liked her head and expression, and good pigmentation.  She has enough bone and strength, and is balanced overall.  Good body, nice bend of stifle and good feet.  Fit and well presented.  Pressed hard for Res CC.
3rd: BAILEY Mr & Mrs G & N B Greyflax Just Peachy
Res: MORTON, Ms A & MORGAN Mr J Ch Cothertone Duchenne
VHC: REDMOND, Mrs P A & FRIEND Mr J Ch Shagiead Lady Sea With Greybrows

SpLCB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: FAIRCLOTH Mr & Mrs L Beardswood Poesy At Calbraidh – nice, well covered bitch.  Attractive head and expression, moved well and kept her topline.

VB (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: ROBERTSON Dr D & Mrs B A Chuilinn Afra – nice generous bitch, looking good and moving well.  Very fit, lovely head and expression, and good coat.  Best Veteran.
2nd: TRESH Ms K Trentdale Glamis Of Lyndorthwin – another nice one, but not moving as well as (1) above.  I love to see veterans wearing their years so lightly, so well done the owners for keeping their hounds fit and well.
